Coptic Christians in the Egyptian Church have been nominated for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.

According to reports, The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not release the identities of the 311 nominees of this year, but the organisation Coptic Orphans (a development organisation) announced the nomination on its Facebook page.

The Copts, an ethno-religious group in Egypt, has endured a series on attacks and persecutions over the past years.

Earlier in January, gunmen shot dead a Coptic Christian man in the turbulent north of the Sinai Peninsula while in October 2017, a priest was stabbed to death in Cairo.

The Orthodox Christian community has however remained a beacon of peace in spite of the numerous attacks.

The final recipient of the prize will be announced on October 5 and awarded in December in Stockholm.
