North Korean Leader, Kim Jong-un, has invited Pope Francis to visit his country, South Korea’s government said.

According to the BBC, the invitation visit the North’s capital of Pyongyang will be presided over the South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, who hopes to visit the Vatican next week as part of his European tour.

Reports say that Kim told his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in, at a summit last month that he would “ardently welcome the pope if he visits Pyongyang.”

“During the meeting with Pope Francis, [Mr Moon] will relay the message from chairman Kim Jong-un that he would ardently welcome the Pope if he visits Pyongyang,” South Korea’s official, Kim Eui-kyeom, told reporters.

This is not the first time a pope has been invited to North Korea.

The invitation is part of campaign to soften the image of North Korea.
