Chris Anyanwu, a Catholic Priest and director of Social Communications, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, has decried the high rate of poverty and hunger in the country.

The cleric while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that urgent action was needed in order to curtail the violent crimes being committed against harmless citizens.

“The recent increase in the number of kidnappings and killings, especially those of members of the clergy, is abominable.

“It is therefore important that the security forces should do more in collaboration with the citizens to reduce crime to the barest minimum,’’ he said.

Anyanwu listed lack of good governance, inequality and unjust society as the root causes of the violent crimes and agitations in the country.

“Frustration in the land has turned the masses against the society. But, good leadership and provision of social amenities are some of the ingredients in solving the numerous challenges facing the nation,’” the cleric said.

On the bill to regulate activities of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), which has scaled through second reading at the House of the Representatives, Anyanwu said the church has done its part.

“The church has done much in the development of the health and educational sectors without government funding and does not need new regulations as it relates to its funds.

“However, the church will be on the watch to ensure that no laws formulated will affect its activities to humanity,’” he said.

Rev. Fr. Chris Anyanwu disclosed that the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has advocated for the re-consecration of the country to God.

“We therefore urge all Nigerians to intensify prayers for God’s intervention in our political and socio-economic lives,’” he said.
