Vatican Denies Making Church Deal With Saudi Arabia

The Vatican has denied making a deal with Saudi Arabia to build churches for Christian worshippers in the Arab country.

The Egypt Independent reported last week that an agreement between Roman Catholic Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Mohammed bin Abdel Karim Al-Issa of the Muslim World League had been reached to allow churches for Christian worshippers in the country.

However, a spokesperson for the Vatican denied the report, describing it as ‘false’, Daily Mail said.

The cardinal visited Saudi this year and met the royal family, urging the Muslim country to treat its citizens equally.

Saudi Arabia’s anti-extremism Etidal centre hosted Cardinal Tauran as the crown prince pushes for inter-religious exchange in the ultra-conservative Sunni kingdom.

There are no Christian churches in Saudi Arabia, the only country in the region without one. The country allows Christians to enter as foreign workers for temporary work, but does not allow them to practice their faith openly.
