US Pastor, Andrew Brunson, currently serving house arrest in Turkey has filed a formal appeal before the country’s Constitutional Court to overturn two lower court refusals to release him.

The 10-page petition filed by his lawyer and studied by World Watch Monitor called for “urgent” and “corrective” action by Turkey’s highest court to set free the evangelical pastor, after two years of incarceration.

“There is no reasonable or acceptable legal reason for his freedom to be limited in such a way. There is no possibility for the defendant to destroy evidence,” attorney Ismail Cem Halavurt argued.

Brunson faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted on the terrorism and espionage charges, which the pastor has denied flatly, declaring in court: “I am an innocent man on all these charges. I reject them. I know why I am here. I am here to suffer in Jesus’s name.”

He has been in prison in Turkey for more than 2 years.
