No Room for ‘Mind Your Business’ Christainity, says Kukah

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has observed that the culture of ‘mind your business’ has no room in Christianity.

The bishop, who spoke on Thursday evening at the public presentation of a book, ‘Forgiveness: God’s Perfect Gift to Humanity,” said to subscribe to such a culture would amount to not caring about what happens to others.

According to Kukah, as children of God, every genuine Christian should be concerned about the peace or otherwise of others.

He said, “We have become socially conditioned that when we see a dead body at the bus stop, we just jump over it and continue our business.”

On forgiveness, he said that although we talk about it all the time, forgiveness has become a scarce commodity in our country, saying as human beings living among other human beings, conflicts are inescapable and dealing with their aftermath was part and parcel of life.

He said living a Christ-centred life, rather than a self-centred, would imbue in us the love and humanity and the enablement to forgive, adding that we carry a burden when we fail to forgive.

He urged all to be agents of reconciliation and forgiveness, instead wishing their enemies evil and gleefully celebrating their misfortunes with the phrase, “God done catch him or her.”

He commended the author, Mr. Matthew. A. Otalike, a former director of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), for exhaustively dealing with the subject of forgiveness, both in theory and in practice, adding that the priests who have to deal with it only in theory have a hard time doing so.
