Founding President of the African Foundation for Peace and Love Initiatives (AFPLI), Rev Titus Oyeyemi, has said that peace was possible and that youths could be constituted into a new constituency of peace and nation building.
Oyeyemi said this during the launching of a nongovernmental organization called KAIROS Peace and Love Club at the University of Lagos (Unilag).
The launching of the club by AFPLI is to promote peace in higher institutions of learning.
Rev. Oyeyemi noted that the foundation was well prepared to explore the vagaries of adolescence and young adulthood.
“The task would begin at this university campus, to your immediate communities, as well as to the country and the world at large. Yours is an age and time of opportunity. Please be prepared to explore and exploit them. The future of the club and the organisation also rest in your hands,” he said.
The event, which coincided with the 14th Anniversary and second Annual Public Lecture of the Foundation held at Afe Babalola Hall of the institution.
The event tagged: “Cultivating a new constituency of peace builders through structured education for peace and socio-cultural adjustments” brought together over 250 participants drawn from the academia, civil society groups, schools, government, paramilitary forces and international delegates.
It featured speeches, panel discussion, and drama among others.
In her keynote address, the former Head of Sociology Department, Covenant University, Dr Tayo George, lauded the introduction of security studies into the curriculum. He said much more could be done on the part of the government to promote peace through education.
She said the government should include peace and conflict studies in the curriculum at all levels.
