According to him, “I cannot accept that under my roof; it is either she comes back to my faith or I send her packing through dissolution of the marriage.

“The annoying thing is that she does not go to her church alone but takes the children along.

“Now the Central Mosque Association Committee vowed to remove me as an Imam if my wife refused to return as a Muslim.”

After much back and forth, the court’s President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, ordered the dissolution of the marriage, stating that the court had no alternative than to dissolve the marriage as efforts by the court and family to reconcile the couple had failed.

Pastor and Family Die in Lagos Fire

Pastor and Family Die in Lagos Fire

A fire suspected to have been triggered off by a power surge, claimed the life of a Lagos-based pastor, his wife and their two children.

According to Punch Metro, Pastor Kenneth Eze and his family were killed Wednesday morning when tragedy struck on Buraimoh Street in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

According to the report, Kenneth the pastor in charge of World Harvest Ministry in the Gbagada area of the state, and his family lived inside a shop where he and his wife sold drugs and provisions.

Kenneth reportedly relocated his family to the shop after he could not raise money to pay rent for his former apartment.

The victims were said to have been trapped by the two-level security burglar proof at the entrance of the shop and its extension, leading to their death.

Two other shops were affected by the inferno before the intervention of firefighters from the Lagos Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Police.

A screen printer, whose shop was opposite the victims’, told reporters that a power surge triggered the inferno.

“I sleep in my shop as well because of the nature of my work. Power was restored around 2am and that was when the fire started. There was a sudden explosion in the shop. It was difficult to get close to the place because everywhere was on fire. The heat was intense.

“Later, firefighters brought out their corpses. It was the body of the woman that was brought out first, before those of the two children. They initially couldn’t find the pastor. After some search, they found his corpse in the shop, where he was probably attempting to find a way out,” the printer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

The two children, Miracle and Marvellous, were said to be aged six and three respectively.

The Director of the Lagos Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency received a distress call around 2.48am, adding that the Alausa and Ilupeju fire divisions responded.

He said, “We met the fire well alight and our men put it out. There were two levels of burglar proof – one at the entrance of the shop, while the other covered the extension. We found it difficult to gain access because of the burglar proof bars.

“We should not turn our houses to prisons. Safety is very important. Every member of a family should know how the door is locked at night. We should discourage the use of keys to lock doors. When there is a fire incident, people should raise the alarm before it gets too late.”

He said the cause of the fire incident had yet to be established, adding that investigations were ongoing.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, confirmed the fire and the deaths.

“It happened inside a chemist. A man, his wife and their two children were consumed by the fire, which started early in the morning. We alerted the fire service and other emergency responders to the scene,” he added.

The Head, Corporate Communications and Media, Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofulue, said the IE was not aware of the incident.

He added that if the power company was at fault, the emergency workers would  have informed the company.

Lagos to Conduct Census on Religious Centres

Lagos to Conduct Census on Religious Centres

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has directed the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) to conduct a census of religious centres across the state.

Ambode gave the directive while inaugurating 798 members of the NIREC appointed for the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in Lagos.

The governor who was represented by Dr AbdulHakeem Abdul-Lateef, the Commissioner for Home Affairs at the inauguration told the apointees,

“One of the core functions you are going to discharge is the collation of religious institutions at the local government level.

“You must ensure that you compile a list of all churches, all mosques, all faith-based organisations and forward same to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“I must also urge you to work closely with the local government chairman and all other officials at the local government level. You are working directly with NIREC at the state level.

“Always make sure that you relate any matter that is beyond your capacity to the state NIREC and through the state NIREC, it will get to my office as the governor of Lagos State.

“Your meetings will hold quarterly and I urge you to have extra-ordinary meetings in cases of emergencies.

“I urge you to cooperate with the local government officials and do your best to promote peace and orderliness at the local government level.”

Speaking, the co-chairman (Christian) of the state NIREC, Dr Israel Akinadewo, remarked that religious leaders must continue to educate their followers, especially the vulnerable ones at the grassroots.

“A Christian leader is a Christian whose actions and in actions are not only Christ-like but serves as a good example to younger Christians.

“Also in a country like Nigeria and irrespective of what they do for a living, many people are majorly Christians and Muslims.

“Within the NIREC, the people respect the opinions of their leaders, who they refer to as the representatives of God.

“Hence their views on any matter are taken very seriously. Religious leaders should not encourage wars, hatred and vengeance.

“They are to be firm in the discipline of any of their followers who take steps that work contrary to Godly teachings,’’ Akinadewo said.

Earlier, the Co-Chairman (Muslim) of the state NIREC, Dr Tajudeen Yusuf, said the inauguration of the council at the local government level was a proactive step taken by the government.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Mr Muslim Folami, commended Ambode for running a community-based government of inclusion by bringing governance down to the grassroots.

Folami said that by taking the NIREC activities to the grassroots, it would be easier for government to nip any crisis in the bud.

Fourteen persons, comprising seven Muslims and seven Christians each, were appointed into the NIREC in the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in the state.
